Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, from Long Beach CA. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise worked during the night shift as nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was influenced by her time in Selma to later direct the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still in college. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury and examine their junk. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy and, following her decision to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
